Liquidambar acalycina

H.T.Chang

Mountain sweetgum

Altingiaceae

Liquidambar

East Asia Clade

Synonyms:
Altingia acalycina (L.) H.T.Chang

Mountain sweetgum is perhaps the hardiest member of the East Asia Clade, a group of fairly tender species that includes many of the taxa formerly treated under Altingia before the two were merged. While the former Altingia species have unlobed (or nearly unlobed) evergreen leaves, Mountain sweetgum looks more like a classic deciduous Liquidambar. It has become available in both the United States and Europe, and is cold-hardy to USDA Zone 7a and possibly into 6.
